Interestingly even 50 years ago in UK it was always wise to ask for Fire emergency as the Crewe’s were always trained in first aid & resuscitation and much speedier to the scene.

It makes a great deal of sense to integrate the emergency services more closely.

As an American, I think this is a terrible idea. You wind up paying enormous salaries and pensions because everyone loves firefighters and no one will tell them no. And you get over-equipped trucks answer even trivial emergency calls. When my husband and I see fire engines rushing some place in L.A, we say, "Someone hit his head." That's because ~15 years ago my tall husband ran into a low-hanging beam in a mall parking lot, leading to a lump immediately forming on his forehead like in some kind of cartoon. We went to the food court, got some ice, and sat down. He hadn't passed out and had no sigs of a concussion. But someone--not us!--called the emergency services and two trucks responded to the "emergency."
